Everyday, almost 1.3 million vehicles ply the PLUS expressways, comprising the North-South Expressway (NSE), the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), the Federal Highway Route 2 (FHR2), the ELITE highway, the Secondlink, the Seremban-Port Dickson Highway (SPDH) and the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE).
PLUS’s main objective is to provide a safe, smooth and comfortable journey for its users and the PLUS Traffic Monitoring Centre (TMC) plays a vital role as the traffic management nerve centre for the PLUS expressways.
With this in mind, PLUS has invested approximately RM54 million to develop its new TMC in Subang which commenced operations in November 2008.
Dubbed as the most sophisticated traffic monitoring centre in the country, the TMC operates 24-hours everyday and covers more than 60% of all tolled highways in the country. The development of the new PLUS TMC is part of the PLUS efforts to provide better level of service to cater to the increasing needs of highway users.
The PLUS TMC Manages More Than 90,000 Calls a Year and It is the Traffic Management Nerve Centre of the PLUS Expressways Network
With 25 to 35 staff operating the centre daily, the centre’s main function is to collect and disseminate real-time traffic information as well as co-ordinate assistance for highway users.
The PLUS TMC also:
- Manages the 1800 88 0000 (PLUSLine) and Emergency Telephones.
- Monitors movements and operations of PLUSRonda vehicles.
- Manages the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) equipment such as Variable Message Sign (VMS), Automatic Vehicle Detection System (AVDS), Close Circuit Television (CCTV) and Global Positioning System (GPS).
- Disseminates traffic information to users through radio stations, electronic message boards (VMS) and the PLUSLine.
- Liaises with the relevant authorities (Police, Fire Departments, Ambulance and others) and provides tow truck service for faster incident/breakdown clearance on the mainline.
PLUS TMC Applies State-of-the-Art Systems and Equipment For the Benefit of Highway Users
To provide the best service to the highway users, the TMC applies state-of-the-art systems and equipment from various countries such as the United States, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and others.
1) Video Wall System
- This Video Wall system from the United States displays real time images from more than 1,600 CCTVs strategically located on the highway including toll plazas and interchanges.
- Comprises 40 giant screens of 50 inches each.
2) Close Circuit Televison System on the Highway
- Swiss technology CCTVs are installed at 34 strategic locations along the highway. The CCTVs are used to monitor the latest traffic situation on the highway.
3) Variable Message Sign (VMS)
- More than 21 VMS combining local and French technology are placed at strategic locations along the highway to relay traffic information to users.
4) Automatic Vehicle Detection System
- This Belgian based system is installed at the high volume stretch between Rawang-Bukit Lanjan-Shah Alam-USJ.
- The system is able to provide estimated travel time from one toll plaza to another to users via VMS.
5) Closed Circuit Televison (CCTV) at Toll Plaza
- More than 1,600 German technology CCTVs are installed at every lane and toll plaza.
- The system monitors the latest traffic movement at toll plazas.
6) Global Positioning System (GPS) for PLUSRonda
- 110 PLUSRonda vehicles are equipped with local GPS system for tracking of the PLUSRonda vehicles to facilitate coordination of assistance by the TMC to incident/breakdown locations.
