PLUS Expressways Berhad (PLUS) will implement three specific strategy to ensure the public enjoy a...

PLUS Expressways Berhad (PLUS) will implement three specific strategy to ensure the public enjoy a safe, smoother and comfortable journey during the forthcoming Hari Raya Aidlifitri holidays.

The strategies include traffic distribution, customer convenience and efficient traffic management system.

At a press conference held at Persada PLUS to announce PLUS preparations for the festive season, Managing Director Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid said, ”We expect traffic on the North-South Expressway to increase by 30 percent to 1.4 million vehicles a day compared to 1.1 million vehicles on normal days for this upcoming festive season.”

1) Traffic Distribution

In coping with the increase in traffic and ensuring smoother traffic flow, PLUS has came up with a ravel Time Advisory (TTA) to assist the public in planning their journey during the holidays.

The TTA consists of recommended travelling times for various destinations from Klang Valley to major states and town in Kedah, Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. This effort is suggested to distribute traffic and reduce congestion on main routes of the highway, toll plazas and rest and service areas during peak hours.

(Kindly refer to the Travel Time Advisory attached in Attachment A)

The TTA was first introduced by PLUS in 2007 and is based on careful analysis of travel patterns during past festive seasons. It has proven to be a major factor in contributing to smoother traffic on highways during festive period.

“For example, during last years celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitre, approximately 50 percent of highway users followed the TTA suggested by PLUS. Therefore, we hope that the public will continue to cooperate by following the schedule released for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri,“ said Nik Airina.

2) Users comfort

In order to ensure users of the highway enjoy a comfortable journey on the upcoming festive season, PLUS will also take the listed initiatives: -

The Minister of Works, Dato’ Shaziman Abu Mansor today launched the MUFORS Gallery, a road safety centre aimed at raising road safety awareness and education in the country.

The MUFORS Gallery, the first of its kind, is a continuation of the Malaysians Unite for Road Safety (MUFORS) campaign launched last year.

MUFORS Chairperson, Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid said, “PLUS Expressways as a major supporter of MUFORS took the initiative to set-up an exclusive centre dedicated to road safety. We hope to improve road safety awareness amongst highway users and students. The gallery is also PLUS’ commitment to add value to the driving experience of highway users through various initiatives.”

The MUFORS Gallery is a joint collaboration between PLUS Expressways, the Ministry of Works, the Malaysian Highway Authority, the Police, AAM, the Road Safety Department (JKJR) as well as the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety and Research (MIROS).

Located at the USJ Rest and Service Area on the ELITE highway, the MUFORS Gallery offers the public access to road safety information about the importance of road safety.

The gallery features exhibitions by the various partners and sales of road safety equipment. An audio-visual room allows for screening of related road safety videos and short films.

In addition, the public can also reload their Touch ‘n Go and PLUSMiles cards here. The Police will also provide a public service to check and pay traffic summonses here.

Noorizah said, “We hope that the centre will play an important role in educating and changing the bad driving habits of Malaysian drivers. We believe that every individual must play their part in making road safety a culture.”

Among the activities that will be held at the centre are safety campaigns, training, workshops, lectures and informative and entertaining activities for students as well as field trips for schoolchildren.

The MUFORS movement began with gathering pledges from Malaysians on what they could personally do to make the roads safer for all. The campaign garnered more than 240,000 pledges after just three months. “This year, MUFORS asks Malaysians to vote for road safety as our priority,” said Noorizah.

The public can vote for road safety through the MUFORS website at www.mufors.org.my.

The MUFORS movement which started as an online campaign in 2009, empowers Malaysians to voice out their thoughts and concerns on road safety in the country and how road users can do their part in making the roads safer.

MUFORS has been instrumental in giving road safety advocacy a fresh approach by involving Malaysians from all walks of life to take ownership of road safety and specify what their role is in promoting road safety and saving lives

BETTER TRAFFIC FLOW WITH HEAVY VEHICLE BAN RULING

The traffic flow during morning peak hours along three stretches of the North-South Expressway...

The traffic flow during morning peak hours along three stretches of the North-South Expressway (NSE) has improved significantly following the decision to ban heavy vehicles from entering those stretches from 6.30 am to 9.30 am on weekdays with effect from 2 August 2010.

According to PLUS Expressways Berhad’s Managing Director, Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid, surveillance by the PLUS Traffic Monitoring Centre and personnel on the ground have reported a significant improvement in traffic flow at the three stretches – the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) between Shah Alam and Jalan Duta, the NSE between Sungai Buloh and Bukit Lanjan and Federal Highway Route 2 between Subang and Sungai Rasau.

“PLUS Expressways would like to thank the lorry operators for their understanding and cooperation in complying with this new ruling which was introduced by the authorities as one of the strategies towards ensuring smoother traffic flow on busy urban stretches during peak hours.

“We have also received many phone calls, sms and e-mails from members of the public who expressed happiness with the new ruling as they are now experiencing a smoother drive to work in the mornings, with some even stating that their journey time to work is now cut by half!”

“The authorities especially the Works Ministry, Malaysian Highway Authority, Road Transport Department and the police should also be commended for their approval and role in this matter,” Noorizah said in a statement today.

Heavy vehicle operators are advised to make use of the parking facilities provided at the respective rest and service areas on the highway during the banning period before continuing their journey. Suggested rest and service areas include the Sungai Buloh Overhead Bridge Restaurant, Sungai Buloh Lay-By, Rawang Lay-By, Ulu Bernam RSA, USJ Overhead Bridge Restaurant, Dengkil RSA, Seremban RSA, Serdang Lay-By and Nilai Lay-By.

“Drivers of heavy vehicles may also use alternative routes as announced by PLUS earlier,” she said.

Alternative routes that can be utilized by heavy vehicle operators during the banning period are as follows:

Malaysians Unite for Road Safety (MUFORS),a community project set up to empower Malaysians to stand...

Malaysians Unite for Road Safety (MUFORS),a community project set up to empower Malaysians to stand up for road safety, today launched MUFORS Road Reels, a short film competition for students of institutions of higher learning.

With the theme Attitudes on Roads – A Malaysian Journey, the short film competition is aimed at empowering students of institutions of higher learning to have their say through short films and provide a platform to play their part in changing attitudes on Malaysian roads.

“Our aim is to give students a platform through short films to play their part in addressing and changing negative attitudes on Malaysian roads.

“They can do this by capturing and creating moments and messages that will reflect attitudes on Malaysian roads and how these attitudes are related to road accidents and deaths,’ said Chairman of MUFORS, Noorizah Haji Abd Hamid, who is also Managing Director of PLUS Expressways Berhad, the prime mover of MUFORS.

According to Noorizah, the competition will also enable students of institutions of higher learning to be part of MUFORS as agents of change in giving road safety advocacy a fresh approach by encouraging people from all walks of life to take ownership of road safety and specify “what my role is in promoting road safety and saving lives”.

“All students from any discipline can take part in this competition which offers attractive cash prizes of up to RM10, 000 per category to the students and also the institution they belong to,” Noorizah said at the launch of MUFORS Road Reels today. (Please refer to table below for categories and prizes).

The short films for MUFORS Road Reels can be fictional or non-fictional, real or created, comedy, serious or satire as long as it is in line with the theme Attitudes on Roads – A Malaysian Journey. The closing date for entries is 30 October 2010 and students should visit
for more information, entry forms and rules and regulations.

Noorizah also expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the MUFORS campaign last year as an overwhelming 240,000 Malaysians from all walks of life made their personal pledges for road safety via text, photo, video and SMS through the MUFORS website and road shows all over Malaysia.

SMOOTHER TRAFFIC FLOW ON PLUS HIGHWAYS WITH RESTRICTION OF HEAVY VEHICLES DURING PEAK HOURS

As one of the strategies towards smoother traffic flow on busy urban highway stretches during peak...

As one of the strategies towards smoother traffic flow on busy urban highway stretches during peak hours, the Government has decided that heavy vehicles (Class 2 and Class 3) with laden weighing 10,000 kg and above or unladen weighing 10,000 kg and above will be banned along certain routes of the PLUS highway from 6:30 am till 9:30 am every day (except for Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays).
According to the Federal Traffic Chief, SAC Dato’ Abdul Aziz Yusof, “The banning of heavy vehicles along busy urban stretches during morning peak periods will be implemented this coming August 2nd. The routes affected include the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) between Shah Alam and Jalan Duta, the North South Expressway (NSE) between Sungai Buloh and Bukit Lanjan as well as the Federal Highway Route 2 (FHR2) between Subang and Sg Rasau. This is in line with the existing ban on heavy vehicles from entering Kuala Lumpur during the morning peak hours.”
He was quoted during a press conference at Persada PLUS today. Also present were Malaysian Highway Authority's Central Region Director, Zahratul'Ula Mohd Ibrahim, PLUS Expressways Berhad Managing Director, Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid, and Chief Operating Officer, Nik Airina Nik Jaffar.
According to Noorizah, “Slow movement of heavy vehicles is one of the main contributing factors to traffic congestion along these routes especially during the peak hours. The situation is made worse when these heavy vehicles are stranded on the highway due to breakdowns or accidents. With the restriction, we expect the morning peak congestion will be eased.”
In addition, there are available alternative routes that have been identified for heavy vehicle operators to utilize during the banning period, as follows:

NEW LOOK SUNGAI PERAK R&R (SOUTH BOUND) IS FIRST IN ECO-MANAGEMENT

As one of the earliest Rest & Service Areas (RSA) to be opened on the North-South Expressway,...

As one of the earliest Rest & Service Areas (RSA) to be opened on the North-South Expressway, Sungai Perak (South Bound)’s new look now aims to be the first R&R to go green.

Themed ’The Green Trail’ or ’Jejak Hijau’, the recently upgraded RSA adopts a green approach in its design and application.. This includes the construction of a toilet complex with natural ventilation, prayer rooms that takes advantage of natural light, the installation of a ’deck on stilts and columns’ in order to maintain the natural contour of the area as well as to avoid land erosion, and the construction of a noise barrier to absorb sounds from vehicles on the highway.

The RSA also utilizes natural bio-degradable products in order to enhance efficiency, cleanliness and safety. The R&R maximizes the usage of a recycled Eco Cleaner Machine, bio-based detergents and recycled waste bins which are deemed more eco-concern and friendly.

A notable landmark of the Sg Perak (southbound) RSA is a viewing tower which overlooks the Perak River. A jetty build by Perak’s Department of Irrigation and Drainage will complement riverboat cruises once the service opens later this year.

The launch of the new look RSA which cost RM9 million was officiated today by the Deputy Minister of Works, Dato’ Yong Khoon Seng.

In his speech, Dato’ Yong Khoon Seng said that the existence of RSAs along the North-South Expressway was a major factor in contributing to the socio-economic growth of the country. ”Each RSA along the expressway creates business opportunities and develops small and medium enterpreneurs and provides jobs for local communities. As a result, it has managed to increase the quality of life of the people along its alignment in line with the objectives of the New Economic Model,” he said.

PLUS Managing Director Noorizah Haji Abdul Hamid revealed that PLUS has invested some RM120 million to date for upgrading works of 12 of its RSAs and 20 lay-bys.

”PLUS will continue to invest a substantial portion of its revenue to maximize comfort for our users which includes upgrading and maintenance work of its assets and facilities along the expressway,” she said.

PLUS is also currently upgrading the Ayer Keroh (North Bound) and Dengkil (South Bound) RSAs which are expected to be completed and re-opened to the public before the end of the year.

On average, the Sungai Perak RSA (southbound) receives 3,500 patrons daily on weekdays and up to 7,000 visitors on weekends. The total number of visitors increase during festive seasons and school holidays.

PLUS GAVE RM20 MILLION TOLL DISCOUNTS SINCE JANUARY 2009

PLUS Expressways Berhad (PLUS) has given toll discounts totaling almost RM20 million since the PLUS...

PLUS Expressways Berhad (PLUS) has given toll discounts totaling almost RM20 million since the PLUS Travel Incentive Programme (PTI) was introduced in January last year.

Managing Director, Noorizah Hj Abd Hamid said PLUS has put in place various toll discount initiatives as part of its travel incentive programme such as PLUSMiles Loyalty Programme and off peak and festive toll discounts.

“Our travel incentive programme has been well received by highway users and close to 26 million Class 1 vehicles had benefited from this initiative as of end 2009.

“PLUS has been pro-active in supporting the Government’s call to provide incentives and added value to highway users, being the first expressway group in the country to offer such discounts and still actively pursuing with these programmes,” she said.

Noorizah said it has always been PLUS’s priority to provide a safe, convenient and comfortable journey as well as added value to highway users.

“It has been and will continue to be the group’s priority to provide a quality alternative travel route for motorists and to ensure a safe, convenient and comfortable journey for users at all times,” she said.

Noorizah also clarified that motorists would enjoy the off-peak travel discount if they exit the highway between 12 midnight and 7 am.

“It is not that one has to strictly travel between midnight and 7 am. As long as you exit the highway between these times, you are entitled to the discount.

“If a motorist leaves Kuala Lumpur for Melaka at 10 pm and exits Ayer Keroh at 12:10 am, then he or she gets the discount.

“For example, a one-way journey from the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza to the Ayer Keroh Toll Plaza will only cost RM14.90 if the motorist exits the highway between 12 midnight and 7 am compared to the usual rate of RM16.50.”
