SAFER AND SMOOTHER TRAVEL: PLUS INVESTS MORE THAN RM1 BILLION EACH YEAR FOR HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE

work 2PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) invests approximately RM1 Billion every year to maintain all of its highway assets.

PLUS Chief Operating Officer, Mohammad Fuad Khusairi said, "PLUS highway assets comprise of more than 4,800 kilometers of pavement, 6,800 slopes, 638 bridges, 5,500 culverts, 2 tunnels, street lighting, mechanical and electrical equipment, to name a few. As such, we allocate a large amount of budget annually to ensure the public enjoy only the best services on our highways at all times."

According to Fuad, PLUS will not compromise on highway users' safety and comfort.

To meet this demand, PLUS adopts a maintenance strategy which covers Routine, Curative and Preventive maintenance.

"Routine Maintenance comprises of repetitive, cyclical or periodic works such as landscaping, grass cutting, drainage, bridge parapets, road furniture, buildings, mechanical and electronic equipment and so on. Curative Maintenance, on the other hand, consists of repair works which are carried out to address defects and at the same time, maintain safety, serviceability and structural integrity of the highways such as repairs to pavement, bridges, slopes, embankment, drainage, structures and tunnels. Preventive Maintenance is aimed at improving and preserving or minimizing defects deterioration. It consists of planned works to maximize the design life of the assets and facilities.

road work_1In general, approximately 74 percent of the overall highway maintenance budget is focused towards pavement maintenance and repair works.

According to Fuad, road pavement lifespan is determined by factors such as pavement type, the weather, usage and number of traffic.

"As such, extensive, continuous and strict maintenance regime is implemented to ensure the more than 4,800 kilometers of pavement is in good condition at all times. Pavement maintenance and repair works require a significant sum of investment but we do so to ensure the safety and comfort of our users," Fuad explained.

He was quoted at a media briefing on highway maintenance at Persada PLUS, on 22 September.

PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) membelanjakan kira-kira RM1 Bilion setahun untuk menyelenggara semua aset yang disediakan di lebuh raya kendaliannya.

Ketua Pegawai Operasi PLUS, Mohammad Fuad Khusairi berkata, "Aset-aset lebuh raya yang perlu diselenggara termasuklah pavmen (turapan) jalan di lebih daripada 4,800 kilometer-lorong, 6,800 buah cerun, 638 buah jambatan, 5,500 sistem pembentung, 2 buah terowong, lampu jalan, peralatan mekanikal dan elektronik dan lain-lain lagi. Belanja yang besar ini dikeluarkan bagi memastikan orang ramai terus menikmati perjalanan yang terbaik ketika menggunakan perkhidmatan lebuh raya kami."

Menurut Fuad, PLUS tidak akan berkompromi dalam aspek-aspek yang melibatkan keselesaan dan keselamatan pengguna.

Justeru itu, PLUS mengadaptasikan 3 strategi penyelenggaraan lebuh raya iaitu Penyelenggaraan Rutin, Penyelenggaraan Kuratif dan Penyelenggaraan Pencegahan (Preventive).

"Penyelenggaraan Rutin merangkumi kerja-kerja penyelenggaraan berkala/berjadual seperti penyelenggaraan jambatan, landskap, peralatan lebuh raya, bangunan, peralatan mekanikal dan elektronik dan lain-lain lagi. Manakala, Penyelenggaraan Kuratif melibatkan kerja-kerja membaik-pulih kerosakan bagi meningkatkan tahap keselamatan seperti pavmen (permukaan jalan), struktur jambatan, cerun, sistem perparitan, terowong dan sebagainya. Penyelenggaraan Pencegahan pula terdiri daripada kerja-kerja memanjangkan jangka hayat aset dan kemudahan yang disediakan di lebuh raya," jelas Fuad.

Kira-kira 74 peratus peruntukan penyelenggaraan lebuh raya PLUS digunakan untuk menyelenggara dan membaik-pulih pavmen (turapan) jalan.

Menurut Fuad, pavmen jalan juga mempunyai jangka hayat di mana ia bergantung kepada pelbagai faktor-faktor seperti jenis pavmen, cuaca, kadar penggunaan dan jumlah trafik.

"Oleh itu, banyak kerja-kerja penyelengaraan perlu dilaksanakan untuk memastikan lebih daripada 4,800 kilometer-pavmen lebuh raya PLUS berada di dalam keadaan yang baik pada setiap masa. Kerja-kerja menyelenggara pavmen serta aset dan peralatan lebuh raya sudah pastinya menelan belanja yang amat besar demi keselesaan dan keselamatan orang ramai," kata Fuad.

Beliau berkata demikian pada satu taklimat media berhubung penyelengaraan lebuh raya di Persada PLUS, 22 September lalu.
